The journey behind ELM
ELM Editions began with lived experience — with one family trying to understand what sat beneath behaviour, distress and a growing inability to feel safe in school.
What began as a search for answers became a determination to make the path clearer for others. Too often, families are left navigating complex systems while children’s needs remain misunderstood, and educators are asked to respond without the time, tools or whole picture they need.
ELM Editions was created to bridge those worlds. We turn lived experience, professional insight and evidence-informed practice into compassionate, accessible guidance that helps adults look beyond behaviour and understand the whole child.
The person behind ELM
I’m E. L. Mitchell — founder of ELM Editions, a lived-experience educator, parent advocate and creator of the ELM Framework System™.
This work grew from years spent trying to understand what was happening beneath my own child’s distress, behaviour and difficulty feeling safe in education. It was also shaped by my experience of being a child whose needs were not always understood.
ELM Editions is not theory written from a distance. It brings together lived experience, careful research and the insight of families, educators and professionals to create guidance that feels both compassionate and genuinely usable.
I created ELM so that parents feel less alone, educators feel better equipped, and children are met with curiosity and understanding before judgement.
Why this work matters
Children experiencing SEND, school distress, masking or emotional overwhelm are too often understood only through what adults can see — attendance, behaviour, refusal or withdrawal.
Parents may spend years trying to explain the child they see at home, while educators are expected to respond without always having the time, resources or complete picture they need.
ELM Editions exists because understanding changes what happens next. When adults become curious about what sits beneath behaviour, responses can become safer, more compassionate and more effective.
Every ELM publication is designed to bridge the space between families, education and professional support — helping everyone see the whole child and move forward together.
