The lived experience behind ELM Editions
E. L. Mitchell FA4C is the founder of ELM Editions and author of The SEND Parent Survival Toolkit.
Drawing on lived experience of SEND parenting, advocacy and caregiving, she develops resources that help families explain their experience and help professionals understand the child across the whole day.
Her work recognises what happens between appointments and decisions: the routines, recovery, caring responsibilities and uncertainty that families manage while they wait for support.
Every publication begins with the same question: Does this help the next family?

The ELM Method
How every ELM publication helps readers think — not simply what it tells them to do.
Understanding before judgement
Behaviour and attendance are never the whole story. We begin by asking what the child may be communicating.
Curiosity before certainty
We stay open to context, unmet needs and different perspectives before deciding what something means.
Relationships before plans
Safety, trust and connection are the foundations of meaningful support.
The whole child
Children are understood within their emotional, relational, developmental and family context — not through isolated behaviours.
Helping people understand before they judge
At ELM Editions, we believe information should feel empowering rather than overwhelming.
Our publications bring lived experience, reflective practice and accessible guidance together — so families feel less alone and professionals have a clearer language for compassionate support.
Understanding can change what happens next.
